WITH EARLY PREPARATION AND GOOD ADVICE

Planning a move to residential aged care can be stressful. At Orange Financial Planning, we believe early preparation and good advice can provide peace of mind.

Our accredited aged care specialist, Kim Bryant, can provide the fundamental advice and support needed when making the personal and financial decisions you are faced with during this stressful time.

Kim is dedicated to helping clients navigate their way through the aged care maze. Read on for her seven essential steps for providing peace of mind in the process of planning for aged care…

SEVEN ESSENTIAL STEPS FOR PEACE OF MIND

  1. Plan Ahead – Start the family meeting now! There is no time like the present to discuss options and concerns. Share the decisions and the process for the best outcome.
  2. Assess Options – Weigh up the options that are available to you. Will it be home care or residential care? Where do you go to find more information?
  3. Search Services – What criteria is important in deciding where to live? Make a list of amenities/health care needs and then find service providers. Research the application process including things such as timeframes required.
  4. Understanding the COSTS – What will you pay for residential care? This can be complex as it is divided into different areas. How will you cover the costs?
  5. Covering Costs – Will you make a lump sum or ongoing payments? What are the implications for Centrelink, estate, and tax? When is a good time to sell your home?
  6. Estate Planning – When your circumstances change – what is the impact on your estate? Is your Will up to date? Are appropriate powers in place with enduring power of attorney and enduring guardianship? Have you nominated death benefits on investments?
  7. Moving – When you accept a place in an aged care service, you will be asked to sign a resident agreement. This provides details of services provided and fees payable. When do you start paying fees? How much will you have to pay? Will you still get Centrelink?
